There's a Grappa Fruit Tree in our Yard! | VINI, VIDI, VICI
Updated: May 17, 2020
What's happening, everybody? For those that may be checking out my blog for the first time, welcome! My name is Chelsea, and I am ya girl who is here to tell you about the adventures, wild things, and some great fuel for thoughts that happen in my life. I currently live in Italy with my amazing husband, Justin, and our rambunctious fur-baby, Milo.
We're a military couple who did not see their first year in the military going this way, but we definitely aren't mad about how it's gone so far.
These VINI, VIDI, VICI posts are stories from our time here in Italy. VINI, VIDI, VICI is a Latin phrase meaning I came, I saw, I conquered. This is also a phrase I have tattooed on my inner left shoulder. I got this tattoo back in 2017 after I studied abroad in Florence, Italy.
When you get the chance to live abroad, whether that be for a semester of college or a year or so of your life you learn a lot. You learn to become comfortable in uncomfortable situations. You learn to adapt to your environment. Ultimately, you conquer new obstacles and gain a new appreciation for the world around us.
So, how did we stumble upon a grappa tree in our yard?
Well, let me tell you all about it :)
April 10th, 2020:
It's a beautiful Friday afternoon, Justin's off based off a different work schedule. With the beautiful weather calling, we decided to go outside (in our yard of course, cause #coronavurus).
I realized I needed to water the plants, that our amazing gardener Michele planted for us. So
Justin grabs one of Milo's toys and starts playing with him in the yard. We have two neighbors that are both Italian. Our one neighbor knows English pretty well, so it's fun communicating with him teaching him more English words, and him teaching us some Italian.
Our other neighbor who only speaks Italian. We use a lot of hand motions and pointing at things when we talk to him. If all else fails we use Google Translate too. He's a big fan of thunderstorms too, so when it looks like it's about to come down hard we see him from our porch smiling real big and he points to the sky to tell us.
He also has a dog. His name is Aaron. Milo and Aaron like to bark at each other through the fence. This particular morning Milo wanted to bark aggressively at Aaron. So Justin goes over to calm Milo down and our neighbor starts talking to Justin and pointing to one of our trees.
Justin is a bit confused at this point and doesn't really understand what he was trying to say. So he puts his pointer finger up and says "one moment."
He proceeds to go into his home and returns with a jar of fruit with some liquid in it. He points to the jar and then the tree in our yard and says, "Grappa!" Justin instantly realized that he was trying to say we have grappa trees in our yard.
For those of you who may not know what Grappa is, it is similar to America's Moonshine. We aren't 100% sure how our neighbor made his jar. But it seems like if you take some of the fruit and put it in a jar with water, and let it sit in a dark place for some time it will eventually turn into this very strong Italian acholic beverage.
Our neighbor was so kind that he gave us a jar of his own grappa! So we definitely know we have to try and make him a jar too!
So if y'all suddenly see some Grappa being sold with the Chels Meets World logo you know I made it big out here :)
I hope y'all enjoyed this story-time!
Stay tuned for more.
Stay positive friends,
